Supporting Esparto After the July Explosion

On July 1, a fireworks facility in the Esparto area exploded, causing widespread evacuations and power outages. Tragically, seven lives were lost. While most homes had power restored by July 10, a few families, including those in rural areas, faced a second week without electricity. Many were unable to store or prepare food safely.

How We Responded Together

Yolo Food Bank immediately partnered with the Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) to support those most affected. “The Oakdale incident reminded us that no single organization can meet the challenges of a disaster alone,” said HHSA Director Monica Morales. “It is only through trusted partnerships and shared responsibility that we can ensure comprehensive, compassionate, and effective relief for our communities.”

Thanks to HHSA, we received a list of households experiencing extended outages. Our team prepared emergency food boxes with fresh produce and shelf-stable groceries. Families also were eligible to receive $150 grocery gift cards to help them meet urgent needs.

“When there is this kind of impact on our community, it’s so important for people to have access to the help they need,” said Genevieve Pyeatt, Director of Programs at Yolo Food Bank, who led the response. “I’m glad we could be a source of support for households trying to recover from this tragedy.” We also delivered additional groceries to RISE Inc. in Esparto, a local partner agency that helps provide food access to the entire community.

Supporting Yolo County Every Day

Even as this emergency response has wound down, our commitment to all Yolo County communities continues. “As we look ahead,” said Monica Morales, “this collaboration stands as a model for how we must continue to work together to safeguard and support those we serve.” We know that disasters, whether natural or human-caused, can occur at any time. Our ability to respond quickly depends on the collective actions of our community.
