Meeting More Needs at Our Migrant Centers

Expanding Support Beyond Groceries

This summer, Yolo Food Bank teamed up with Sheila Allen, County Supervisor for the 4th District, to bring more than just food to Yolo County Housing’s migrant centers in Davis, Madison, and Dixon. Alongside our groceries, families received menstrual hygiene products, an essential need that is an extra expense for women.

Through our Cultivo Program, we’ve been delivering fresh produce and pantry staples to these centers since the spring harvest season began. When Supervisor Allen’s office joined the opening day at the Davis Migrant Center in April, they saw an opportunity to do even more by making sure families had better access to menstrual hygiene products.

Sheila Allen reached out to our Executive Director, Karen Baker, to inquire about how her office could assist. “I am so grateful to Karen and her team for jumping into action,” County Supervisor Allen shared. “Last week, my team visited the Davis [migrant] center to meet the Yolo Food Bank team during their drop-off.”

Together, we coordinated with Allen’s office to share 292 pounds of menstrual hygiene products among the Davis, Madison, and Dixon centers. These items were sent out alongside the fresh produce and shelf-stable groceries that families rely on each month.

Thanks to donations from local stores and pharmacies, these hygiene kits were distributed to those who needed them most. “It was a huge success,” Sheila said with enthusiasm, “and we look forward to continuing this partnership with Yolo Food Bank to provide menstrual hygiene products to all who need them.”

Delivering Dignity Through Partnerships

“Access to essentials such as food or menstrual products is about dignity. When we see a need, we act. Thanks to this partnership, families at the migrant centers had one less barrier to their well-being,” said Armando Salud-Ambriz, Director of External Affairs at Yolo Food Bank.

At Yolo Food Bank, nourishing our community means meeting more than just hunger needs. With the support of Supervisor Allen’s office and the generosity of local businesses, we can make sure families have what they need to live with health, comfort, and dignity.
