2017-2018 Annual Report

Annual Report

2017-2018

Welcome

At Yolo Food Bank, we believe people deserve to not only survive, but thrive. With that vision in mind, our mission is to end hunger and malnutrition in Yolo County.

The research is clear, food security results in better outcomes in health and wellness, education, job performance, mental health, overall quality of life, and ultimately benefits our community.

Positioned in a primarily agricultural county, we are working with farmers and retailers within our region to recover produce, grocery items, and so much more for those who need it. A coalition of almost 200 partnerships extends our reach to every corner of the county, ensuring that nobody is left behind.

We are proud of the work we do and appreciative of the support you’ve given us. Whether you’ve donated your time, made a generous gift, or spread the word about Yolo Food Bank, we hope this report will help you recognize the impact your contribution has made for your neighbors.

This coming year, will you make a commitment to change lives? You can discover different ways to volunteer by clicking here or making a donation today at yolofoodbank.org/give.

Programs

Kids Farmers Market

Ensuring Children’s Nutrition and Health Education

In Yolo County, one in four children are food insecure and more than half of children qualify for free or reduced-price meal programs at school. Yolo Food Bank is proactively addressing this social inequity faced by too many children by providing them with nutritious food. Through Kids Farmers Market, Yolo Food Bank provided children at seven low-income preschools and elementary schools with ongoing access to fresh fruits and vegetables through a fun, interactive farmers market-style distribution.

Eat Well Yolo

Providing Individuals with Nutritious Foods

Eat Well Yolo is a Yolo Food Bank distribution program which provides families and individuals with ongoing access to fresh produce and healthy foods. Vulnerable community members in need of food assistance can attend weekly distributions at nearly two dozen sites in Yolo County to receive fruits, vegetables, and other perishable goods, including bread and dairy.

Yolo Grown

Collecting Fresh Produce the Local Food System

Yolo Food Bank’s Yolo Grown program increases access to fresh produce among food insecure residents through a network of partnerships with local farmers, and others in the agricultural industry. As a result, clients received higher quality, more diverse, and culturally relevant produce throughout the year. In combination with donations from other sources, 30% of food distributed annually by Yolo Food Bank is fresh produce.

Emergency Food Assistance Program

Distributing Food to Low-Income Households

Yolo Food Bank is the sole authorized Yolo County distributor of food from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Emergency Food Assistance Program. This program benefits low-income individuals throughout the county through public food distributions, food pantries, or other nonprofit partners that prepare food.

Capital Campaign

Logo for Yolo Food Bank capital campaign

Yolo Food Bank is developing a new food distribution warehouse and operations facility to meet the food security need of Yolo County.

This 36,000 square-foot site will serve as a comprehensive central hub with increased cold storage capacity for perishable items and enhanced storage conditions for all food. It will increase the efficiency of hundreds of passionate volunteers who sort and repackage food for distribution and the nonprofit partners who pick up food each day for food closets, homeless and domestic violence shelters, senior meal delivery programs, migrant centers, college students, healthcare organizations, faith-based organizations, and other worthy programs across Yolo County.

You can view on-going construction at 233 Harter Avenue in Woodland, right around the corner from our current facility.
